Once again writers unite. This weekend is the Muskoka Novel Marathon, an event that promotes and raises money for literacy. I participated in 2004 and 2005, in both cases with Bruce Pirrie. We co-wrote 2 different manuscripts and raised money for this cause as well. In 2006 we went back with a crew to shoot a film about the event called FlipBook with a group of talented artists who created a film to share this cause with the world.
On Friday night, the Juno and Gemini award-winning singer/composer/song writer Sarah Slean stepped out on the main stage in a gorgeous white dress and teal blue Barebottom Shoes. She drew attention to her dress calling it a “Jetson’s Dress” and then I heard the words from the back of the audience. Sarah pointed out her Barebottom Shoes! She said wearing them made her feel like a forest nymph. Then she suggested the audience go to my booth and buy a pair. What an incredible testimonial! Crowds visited us throughout the weekend and lots of people tried on the shoes and bought too.

In Step One, we covered some reasons people might want to go barefoot and how to overcome the fears and social barriers that might get in the way. In Step Two, we’re going to delve into what it’s really like going barefoot (outside your home!) and what to expect out of it.
We’ll talk about our own definitions of what it means to be “barefooters,” discuss the wide variety of physical and social environments in which barefooting is both possible and practical, and offer strategies for making it work for people who want to do it.
We’ll be discussing our own experiences: Sue Regan Kenney (designer of Barebottom Shoes) will talk about her recent 225km barefoot walk on the Camino, and Stephanie Welch (author of the upcoming Human Body User Manual will share her experiences in both urban and natural environments. We’ll also both share our experiences and perspectives on barefoot running.
